About The Orwell Awards

(1) Who am I? I am an artist by profession and I also design websites. I spend a lot of my free time surfing the internet. I also value my privacy.

(2) Most people are unaware of the almost daily advances in surveillance technology, and the eager readiness that governments and corporations in the "free" world have adopted this technology.

(3) Viewed one article at a time, no single intrusion into our privacy looks particularily threatening. Taken in totality, the hundreds of articles on this website document what appears to be a coordinated assault on privacy, dignity and freedom. Links to new articles are now being added at the rate of one or more per day, with no end in sight.

(4) This generation will decide if our grandchildren will be born in jail. A big jail cell at first, that gets progressively smaller with each advance in surveillance technology.

(5) Within 200 yards of Orwell's former residence, flat number 27B, where Orwell lived until his death in 1950, there are 32 CCTV cameras, scanning every move. The gardens outside the flat are under 24-hour surveillance from two cameras attached to traffic lights. The flat's rear windows are constantly recorded on more security cameras. Down the street, is his favourite pub, the Compton Arms, where another camera at the rear of a car dealership records every person entering or leaving the pub.

(6) Some people say that there is nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide. I believe George Orwell would ask why it is any of your business.

(7) The barbed wire in the eye on the front page is actually a picture of the barbed wire fence at the Dachau concentration camp.
